By Region

Farming Varies Across Germany's States

Germany's agricultural landscape divides broadly into the northern lowlands — where large-scale arable farming dominates — and the southern highlands with their mixed cultivation and orchards. Understanding which state produces which crops helps in planning around harvest timing.

Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Brandenburg account for a large share of Germany's grain and sugar beet production. Baden-Württemberg and the Rhineland-Palatinate produce most of the country's wine. The Altes Land district near Hamburg is Germany's largest contiguous fruit-growing region.

Bavaria and Hesse combine grain cultivation with hop growing for brewing — Bavaria's Hallertau district is the world's largest connected hop-growing region.
